April May Gems - Oct 22 2024 ep35 - Feel Good Movies to Inspire Us There's nothing quite like sitting down with your family or friends, or even all by yourself, curling up on your couch with a bowl full of popcorn and some Maltesers and really enjoying a feel good movie that warms your heart. No full-on swearing or awkward sex scenes, just wholesome inspiration and maybe even a dose of hope. That’s what this episode is all about – reviewing a handful of these kinds of movies. There are some war films, some biographical true stories, some romance flicks, a movie for the intellectual type and one that has been a little conversationally controversial (what with God showing up as a rather large "I'm just baking here in the kitchen" African-American woman - that later morphs into an old American Indian man, Jesus is introduced as a kind middle eastern wood-worker that says that "the church is a bureaucratic institution created by humans" and the Holy Spirit appears to be portrayed as a mysterious Asian gardening girl. #TheShack.) Then, I’ve even thrown in a fun Christmas musical starring the legendary rap artist Lecrae and Joel Smallbone from 4K&C that hit the big screens just last year. You might want to grab a pen and paper during this episode or open up your notes app as some of these beauties will be worth jotting down. April May, author and founder of April May Gems and mother of five, is passionate about sharing her stories to encourage and inspire others and to restore hearts that are in need of hope. Play

The Stories We Hold

Introducing you to The Stories We Hold, a powerful collaboration between Fresh FM and Cultural Conversations.

Through this series, we shine a light on the rich cultural experiences of young migrants and former refugees in Te Tau Ihu. Their stories of migration, hope, and resilience are captured in a short-form documentary series.

We hear stories from Nepal, Palestine, Colombia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Pakistan. They symbolise the strength to build a new life while staying connected to cultural roots, the courage to share untold stories, and the hope that people like them will find a sense of belonging here in Aotearoa.

Huge thanks to Te Puna Tahua Lottery Grants Board, who have funded this collaboration.
